Police Arrest Man for Murder of 22-Year-Old Chiang Mai Hospitality Worker

The Thailand Royal Police in Chiang Mai province have arrested a 31-year-old man for the murder of a young hospitality worker, whose body was discovered in a rented house within a longan orchard on March 7. The suspect, identified as Phanuwat, allegedly confessed to strangling 22-year-old Usa—known locally as Praew or Yupa—after she resisted a sexual assault.

Usa's employer found her body on Saturday afternoon after she failed to report for shifts at a Chiang Mai bar for approximately three days. The victim, originally from Wiang Haeng district, was discovered in her residence in Nam Phrae subdistrict wearing blue pajamas with the bottoms pulled down. Forensic examiners noted visible strangulation marks around her neck, and investigators estimated she had been dead for roughly 48 hours before discovery.

Hang Dong Police Station, under the command of Pol. Col. Chakrayut Chotiwachiraphong, treated the scene as potentially staged. While two mobile phones belonging to the victim were missing, other valuables—including cash and jewelry—remained untouched, ruling out robbery as a motive. Nearby surveillance footage became a critical piece of evidence in narrowing the pool of suspects.

An autopsy conducted by the forensic department at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital confirmed strangulation as the likely cause of death, though full toxicology and injury reports are pending.

The Arrest and Confession

By the evening of March 8, authorities had detained Phanuwat, who worked as a caretaker for the longan orchard where Usa rented her home. Initial police statements described his connection to the victim's family, making him a figure in her social circle. According to investigators, he admitted to entering her residence with the intent to sexually assault her. When she resisted, he allegedly used a hairband to strangle her. He reportedly told police he ceased the attack upon discovering she was menstruating but had already caused fatal injuries.

The suspect's proximity to the crime scene—he lived and worked on the same property—provided both access and opportunity. Police have not disclosed whether he had a prior criminal record or history of violence, though community members expressed shock at the arrest.
