The Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched a surf therapy wellness program in Phang Nga Province as part of its medical tourism expansion, combining ocean-based activities with structured therapeutic protocols for stress management.

The initiative, branded "TAT Surf Therapy Program Thailand 2026," integrates surfing with therapeutic protocols originally developed for at-risk youth in South Africa. The program targets business executives, entrepreneurs, and wellness travelers seeking stress reduction during multi-day coastal stays.

Program Overview

Three program tiers: Ranging from 3 to 14+ days, launching after a formal presentation at Thailand Health Excellence 2026 on June 30.

Evidence-based framework: The program incorporates the "Take 5" curriculum from South Africa's Waves for Change, structured to build emotional regulation skills through daily surf sessions.

Strategic location: Phang Nga's Andaman coastline offers consistent year-round swell and proximity to Phuket's international airport.

The Wellness Model

Surf therapy combines physical exertion with cognitive engagement. The activity requires participants to read wave patterns and maintain balance, which research suggests can interrupt rumination patterns associated with stress and anxiety. Structured sessions are supplemented with workshops on breath work and interpersonal skill-building.

The program does not replace traditional mental health treatment. The Tourism Authority of Thailand positions surf therapy as complementary to conventional psychotherapy, suitable for stress management or maintenance after clinical stabilization. Participants with severe mental health conditions should pursue pharmaceutical and talk therapy protocols before enrolling.

Program Architecture

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is developing three formats through its Rise On Wave network, a coalition including Prince of Songkla University Phuket Campus, La Vita Sana, Memories Surf House, and logistics partner Span Global.

Wave Reset Program (3–5 days): Focused on foundational surf technique and rapid stress relief. Sessions are held at Memories Beach in Phang Nga, paired with ocean floating therapy and sound healing at partner accommodations.

Ocean Balance Program (7–14 days): Mid-length immersion including breath work and interpersonal skill workshops. Comparable to wellness programs now available in the UK and Portugal.

Surf & Soul Program (14+ days): Extended residential format designed for burnout recovery or post-trauma stabilization.

Pricing has not been disclosed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Implementation and Access

The "Real Experience & Trust Building Journey" pilot ran June 18–19 in Phang Nga Province, testing logistics before the June 30 formal launch. Instructors combine local surf expertise with clinical oversight from Prince of Songkla University's psychology and sports science departments.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has not announced whether programs will be available to Thailand residents and expats or remain limited to international wellness tourists. It has also not released pricing details or expanded timelines. More information is expected at the June 30 presentation at Thailand Health Excellence 2026.

Regulatory Context

No medical licensing framework currently governs surf therapy in Thailand, unlike the UK where similar programs operate under National Health Service guidelines. This represents a regulatory gap for a program involving ocean-based physical activity.

What's Next

The June 30 presentation will clarify pricing structures, international partnership details, and expansion plans beyond Phang Nga. For residents and expats interested in accessing these programs or learning more, this presentation will provide critical information about availability and participation requirements.
