While this suggests the national economy will absorb the shock, the human and infrastructural toll on East Nusa Tenggara—one of Indonesia's poorest provinces—will be disproportionately severe.

Authorities have advised residents to remain alert for aftershocks and to avoid or inspect damaged buildings before re-entering them. The warning carries particular urgency given the region's geological profile: Flores sits at the convergence of three major tectonic plates—the Indo-Australian, Eurasian, and Pacific plates—making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions globally. The island experiences roughly 190 earthquakes annually, with one magnitude 6 or higher event every 10 to 15 years.

The Flores back-arc thrust fault (FBAT), which accommodates approximately 10 millimeters per year of convergence between the Sunda and Australian plates, is believed responsible for this latest rupture. The same fault system generated devastating earthquakes in 1815, 1820, and most notoriously in December 1992, when a magnitude 7.7 quake triggered tsunami waves up to 26 meters high in some areas, claiming 2,500 lives. More recently, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake offshore north of Maumere in December 2021 killed one person and injured 173 others.

Relief Operations Face Logistical Hurdles

Search and rescue operations continue across Flores, with teams working to locate the two individuals still trapped beneath collapsed structures. The BNPB has deployed personnel to the four most affected regencies, but power outages and severed roads have complicated efforts to reach isolated villages.
