A 22-year-old saleswoman in Pattaya discovered an unwanted intruder had entered her fourth-floor apartment through a fire escape on Monday evening, June 1. The incident occurred in the Bang Lamung district while she was out buying food.

What Happened

Pratthana Thongmalee left her apartment around 6:55 PM for a quick food run. When she returned, she found one of her cats distressed and reviewed her indoor security camera footage. The recording showed a man, estimated to be in his 20s to 30s, wearing a white t-shirt and black pants, entering through a rear window connected to the building's external fire escape. He moved through her apartment and switched on the overhead light before knocking over the camera, which cut off the feed.

No valuables were reported missing from the apartment. Ms. Pratthana filed a police complaint at Nong Prue police station and moved out the same evening. Police are investigating and reviewing security footage from the area to identify the intruder.

Fire Escape Security Concerns

The incident highlights a vulnerability in Pattaya's residential buildings: fire escapes—mandated by Thailand's national fire safety regulations—often lack dedicated surveillance or alarm systems. Many mid-rise apartments in the city have 24/7 lobby security and CCTV in common areas, but fire escapes themselves frequently lack motion-activated lighting or monitoring on windows that open onto them.

Recommendations for Residents

For Pattaya residents concerned about security, experts suggest keeping fire escape-adjacent windows locked when not in use, installing supplemental window locks, and requesting that building management add motion-activated lighting or additional CCTV coverage on rear façades. Residents should report suspicious activity—such as individuals lingering on fire escapes—to local police, and verify that their apartment's fire escape access points meet current safety code requirements.

Residents are encouraged to contact Nong Prue police or their nearest station to report break-ins or suspicious activity. Building management and property owners play an important role in maintaining both fire safety compliance and perimeter security measures.
