Precious Shipping Public Company Limited has successfully repatriated 20 crew members from the cargo vessel Mayuree Naree, which was struck by missiles in the Strait of Hormuz on March 11. The seafarers arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport this morning, returning safely to their families. Three crew members remain missing.

The Attack

The Mayuree Naree was struck by projectiles that ignited a fire in the engine compartment approximately 11 nautical miles north of Oman's coast. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Royal Navy of Oman rescued 20 of the 23 crew members, transferring them to the port city of Khasab for medical evaluation and consular processing. Thai authorities coordinated their evacuation flights. According to Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, all survivors have been confirmed alive and without life-threatening injuries.

The fate of the three missing sailors remains uncertain. Maritime experts believe they may be in the engine compartment, though the fire's intensity and structural damage have prevented immediate rescue attempts. Precious Shipping has not disclosed whether recovery operations are continuing.

Broader Context

The attack on the Mayuree Naree occurred as part of escalating tensions in the Gulf region. The incident underscores the vulnerability of Thai maritime commerce operating in waters affected by Middle Eastern conflict.

Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing "deep concern" over the Hormuz situation and urging "all parties to exercise restraint and reduce tensions." Thai diplomats have reportedly been in contact with counterparts in Tehran, Muscat, and Riyadh regarding safety for Thai-flagged vessels in the region.

What Comes Next

The return of the 20 crew members provides some relief for their families, but the unresolved status of the three missing sailors remains a concern. Precious Shipping has not announced compensation plans or detailed next steps for vessel recovery.

For the Thai shipping sector, the incident is a reminder of geopolitical risk in an industry dependent on open sea lanes. The situation continues to develop as authorities work to clarify the status of the missing crew members.
